The Alganesh International Veteran Tegaru Women Association (AIVTWA) launched a project to address the urgent needs of Tigrayan refugees in Sudan, particularly women, girls, and children who have fled the genocidal war in Tigray, Ethiopia. The project aims to minimize preventable diseases and malnutrition risks in the short term while developing a long-term strategy to support the refugees in their uncertain future.
During the project initiation phase, over 70,000 Tegaru refugees, consisting mainly of women, children, and older people, fled to Sudan seeking safety and leaving behind their belongings. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and Sudanese authorities relocated many of the refugees to the Umrakuba camp, but the overwhelming demand for humanitarian aid has strained available resources. Concerns exist about waterborne diseases, COVID-19, malnutrition, and other communicable diseases.
AIVTWA, recognizing the urgent needs, mobilized its own resources to support the refugees. They provided $4,500 worth of supplies including milk, sanitation soap, and menstrual pads to Tigrayan refugee mothers in Sudan. Additionally, through virtual fundraising events, AIVTWA raised $1,000 to assist 60 low-income Tigrayan women who were arbitrarily detained and suspended from their government jobs in Addis Ababa. Another fundraising event generated $10,000 to support women and girls in Tigray who were victims of sexual violence committed by Ethiopian and Eritrean forces. Furthermore, two AIVTWA members contributed $1,000 for the medical needs of two vulnerable women.
